Amalfi for your wedding in Italy
Amalfi the town that gives its name to the coast, is located at the mouth of the Valle dei Mulini; it was the first of the Four Maritime Republics of Italy and for a long time had the monopoly of trade with the East. It looks like a cluster of white houses clinging to the rock and connected to each other by covered alleys and stairways. At the center of the main square is the beautiful Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, with its imposing staircase, the Arab-Norman style bell tower and the suggestive Cloister of Paradise. Also worth visiting is the Museum of handmade paper and the Ancient Arsenals of the Republic.
Sites of Interest: – The urban layout of Amalfi, especially in the historic center, has kept its medieval aspect intact, with the city gates (Porta Maria or De Sandala, Western Gate, Porta Hospitalis), narrow cobbled streets, alleys and stairs leading to picturesque squares, overlooked by beautiful medieval buildings and small chapels; – the watchtowers (Torre dello Ziro, Torre di Vettica, Torre San Francesco or Saracena), part of the defensive system designed in the viceregal period to defend the coastal people from pirate attacks; – the remains of the castle and towers of Pogerola (the ancient Pigellula); – the ancient arsenals of the Maritime Republic, consisting of two lanes divided by ten pillars, used in the past for the construction of warships. It is the only example of a medieval arsenal in Southern Italy. – the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, preceded by an imposing staircase, overlooks Piazza Duomo.
